Everest

There are 3 books in this series by Gordan Korman.  These books are short compared to some other books also written by Gordan Korman, like Masterminds or Ungifted.

This series is about 4 kids, attempting to be the youngest people on the planet to get on top of Mount Everest.  They face several problems along the way, and in the end, it is doubtful if they are able to get to the highest point on Earth. These books were super enjoyable to read, and my favorite would be the last book, the Summit.

What I would have liked would be that Gordan Korman made one whole book, with 3 sections in that book.  Aside from that, I think this series is just perfect.  There is the right amount of suspense, excitement, and more.  I really enjoyed reading this series, and I think you will too.

I can easily rate this series 5 Stars, with no hesitation, and I can recommend it for ages 10+ because there is death in this series.  I think some kids who are younger than 10 can read it, because of the short length, but the book itself might not be appropriate.

Common Questions About Everest

What age is the Everest series appropriate for?

The Everest series is recommended for ages 10-14 (Grades 5th-8th). There are themes of death and some really intense survival situations on the mountain. The books are short compared to some of Korman's other work, so younger advanced readers around age 9 could handle the reading level, but the content is better suited for 10 and up.

What order should I read the Everest series?

Read in order: The Contest, The Climb, and The Summit. The story follows 4 kids competing to be the youngest people to summit Mount Everest, and each book covers a different stage of the expedition. The Summit is easily the best of the three, and the ending is really satisfying.

Is the Everest series based on a true story?

No, it's fiction, but Gordon Korman clearly did a ton of research on actual Everest expeditions. The details about altitude sickness, weather conditions, and the dangers of climbing feel very real. If your kid is fascinated by Mount Everest or survival stories, this series will absolutely hook them. I gave it 5 Stars with no hesitation.

How does the Everest series compare to other Gordon Korman books?

Everest is one of my favorite Gordon Korman series. The suspense is incredible and I think the pacing is perfect. If your kid likes Everest, they should check out Masterminds (also 5 Stars) and Kidnapped on BookVine. Dive is similar in format (3 short books, adventure setting) but I think Everest is the stronger series.

Everest is recommended for ages 10 - 14 (Grades 5th - 9th).
