Find Harry Potter books organized for reading age, and which book is right for your 6, 7, or 8 year old. Age ratings and reading levels for each book in the series, from easy early reader chapters to more advanced titles for kids 8 and up.

I think Harry Potter is the best chapter book series that you should start with. While the books are big, a 8 year old child could probably finish one in several weeks, assuming they read for about 30 mins every day. There are 7 books in the series, each one building off of the last with its own unique plot, keeping the series fresh throughout. After you read Harry Potter, I would recommend the Ranger's Apprentice series, which is also an amazing series that teaches you about loyalty and bravery.

In this series, Harry Potter, who Voldemort attempted to kill, joins Hogwarts, a school for magical students, and meets Ron and Hermoine, who end as his best friends. Voldemort has many people with him, and together they get Harry into quite a bit of trouble, but often, the trio get themselves into trouble.  I would say that the significance of this series is that it shows you with love and friendship, good can always win against evil, no matter how strong it is.

I read each of the books many, many times when I was young, and I really loved reading them. There are also movies for each of the books, and I really enjoyed those, because unlike a lot of other movies, they didn’t differ much from the books, and it made the movies much more enjoyable. I would recommend this book for ages 6+ because of how J. K. Rowling managed to make these books elaborate, with a lot of detail, imagery, and description, but at the same time they weren’t overwhelming. This all contributes to this being my recommended first chapter book series to read, with a 4.5 Star rating.

Common Questions About Harry Potter

What age is Harry Potter appropriate for?

I recommend Harry Potter for ages 6-8 (Grades 1st-3rd) to start. The first two books are perfect for a 6 or 7 year old getting into chapter books — the magic and humor keep them hooked. Books 4-7 get a lot darker though, so those are better for ages 9 and up. If your kid loves this series, Keeper of the Lost Cities and The Chronicles of Narnia are great next reads on BookVine.

What order should I read Harry Potter?

Definitely read them in publication order: Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows. The story builds across all 7 books and honestly gets better and better as it goes — skipping around would spoil some amazing twists.

Is Harry Potter OK for a 6 year old?

The first book, Philosopher's Stone, is a great fit for most 6 year olds who are comfortable with chapter books. There are some mildly scary moments, but nothing too intense — I think it's actually a really fun read-aloud for younger kids. A lot of parents read the first couple books together and then let their kid go solo from Book 3.

Should my child watch the Harry Potter movies or read the books first?

Have your kid read at least the first 2 or 3 books before watching any movies. The best part of Harry Potter is building Hogwarts in your own head — imagining the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, all of it. Once you see the films, Daniel Radcliffe IS Harry forever, and those images replace yours. The movies are fantastic, but nothing beats your own version of the wizarding world. Watch each film after the matching book — it becomes an awesome family tradition.

Harry Potter is recommended for ages 6 - 8 (Grades 1st - 3rd) with Lexile scores ranging from 880L to 1030L.
